About 63 percent of artists and related workers were self-employed in 2004.

• Approximately three out of 10 graphic and interior designers are self-employed.

• Art directors earned a median annual salary of $63,840 as of May 2004.

• Fashion designers had 17,000 jobs in 2004.

• Fine artists, in May 2004, earned a median annual salary of $38,060.

• Graphic designers had 228,000 positions in 2004.

• In 2004, artists (multi-media, fine, and craft artists, art directors, and animators) held approximately 208,000 jobs.

• In 2004, interior designers had 65,000 positions.

• In May 2004, multi-media artists and animators earned a median annual salary of $50,360.

• More than 25% of all fashion designers are self-employed.

• More than half of all photographers are self-employed.

• Photographers held 129,000 jobs in 2004.

• Salaried craft artists earned a median income of $23,520 as of May 2004.

• Two-thirds of all fashion design jobs are in New York or California.
