Challenge Program

                                                                                                                                 Math Home

The Challenge Program provides enrichment in mathematics and language arts for "high end learners" in grades 3, 4, and 5 in all elementary schools. Although students are not seen on a "pull-out" basis until third grade, the Challenge Teacher does serve as a resource for additional enrichment materials to supplement the curriculum for the primary students.

Math units center around problem solving, logic and visual thinking skills. Lessons may include looking at the Stock Market, decisions about personal finance, problem solving, Fibonacci patterns, topology and Matrix Logic

How can my child participate?

Referrals are received from teachers, social workers, school psychologist and principals. Parents who would like their child screened may request this through the classroom teacher.

For math, students are given two test to help determine their mathematical needs and abilities. The SCAT (School and College Ability Test) and the TOMAGS (Test of Mathematical Ability in Gifted Students) are both administered by the Challenge Teacher. Students need to meet testing criteria. Test scores, along with teacher observations, are discussed at a Child Study Meeting for a final decision.
