Music Department
Instrumental Music Program - Curriculum Overview
Beginning Strings Instrumental Music
The string instrumental music program begins in grade 4. Students are matched to one of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello or bass. The process of selecting an appropriate instrument is based on student preference, teacher recommendation, the availability of instruments and the balance orchestra instrumentation for each school.
Weekly lessons are held during the regular school day. Children will be given a form each week to be signed by parents. These forms are to record daily practice time and to indicate areas of musicianship that require extra diligence in practice.
Violin and viola students will need to rent an instrument from a local music dealer. The district provides cellos and basses for a maintenance fee of $40.00 for the school year. Parents are expected to transport these instruments to school for practice and rehearsals.
Please note: In Middle School, cello and bass students are asked to rent an instrument from a local music store for home practice only; the school will provide instruments for in-school use.
Band Instrumental Music
Students in grade 5 are eligible to learn a band
instrument. Class instruction is offered on the flute, clarinet, alto
sax, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba and percussion. The
school district will provide the following band instruments for a $40.00
maintenance fee for the first year: French horn, baritone horn, and
tuba. The following band instruments will need to be rented or purchased
from local music stores: flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone
and percussion kits (including drum pad, bells, and stand).
