About Eagle Elementary School
Eagle Elementary School, the Bethlehem Central School
District's sixth and newest elementary school, opened its doors to students
for the first time in September 2008.
The Bethlehem Central Board of Education decided to build the new school in
an effort to alleviate elementary school overcrowding and give the district
room for future space flexibility. The construction of Eagle is part of the
district's $93 million building project, which the community's voters
approved in 2003 to renovate and upgrade each of the district's buildings.
The naming of this newest Bethlehem Central elementary school was also a
community affair. Students, parents, community members and staff members
submitted potential names, with students ultimately voting on the finalists
in the fall of 2006. Eagle was the clear favorite. "The district mascot is
an eagle, and BCSD is a strong community," a Slingerlands student wrote at
the time on behalf of the new name.
While Eagle opened in the fall of 2008, the school is not done growing. The
district's decision to implement full-day kindergarten required additional
elementary classrooms. In October 2007, as part of a referendum made
possible by a special state construction funding program, voters approved an
8-classroom addition to accommodate the full-day kindergarten program. This
addition will be complete in time for the full-day program's implementation
in September 2009.
In January 2008, the Board of Education appointed longtime BC educator
Dianna Reagan to be Eagle's first principal. Reagan began her teaching
career in Bethlehem 18 years ago and later became an assistant principal at
Slingerlands and elementary ELA supervisor.
