Glenmont swing dances for Haiti to the tune of $1,300

Posted: February 5, 2010

Glenmont students, staff and their families raised $1,370 for relief efforts in Haiti at a swing dance fundraiser on Thursday, Feb. 4.

The money will be donated to the American Red Cross's work in the island nation, which was devasted by an earthquake and its aftershocks in January.

Not long after the earthquake hit, the school announced the swing dance event as a way to help the people of Haiti in a way that would be meaningful to children and cost effective for families. Families were invited to swing dance at the school for a donation of $10.

The evening also included a video, produced by Glenmont students, about Haiti, its people and the challenges they face.

The school was primed for such a swing dance event, as it took place in the wake of January's weeklong dance residency program at the school called, "Building Community through Dance." The program, which featured two New York City-based professional dance instructors at Glenmont for a week, emphasized community building to students through working together on a variety of folk dances including swing.
