The annual Hoops for Heart campaign, an American Heart Association fundraiser in which students play basketball afterschool and into the evening to raise money to fight stroke and heart disease tipped off at the Bethlehem elementary school on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

This year, 391 Glenmont students in all, or 91.5 percent of the entire school, are involved in the effort – a new participation record.

The school, in its 10th year of Hoops for Heart, has grown into a national powerhouse when it comes to the event, raising more than $200,000 total in that time. At last week’s Board of Education meeting, Glenmont was received four awards for its 2007 Hoops for Heart campaign. These included being the top fundraising school in New York State with $28,562 and fourth in the nation.

The American Heart Association’s Hoops for Heart program is geared toward elementary and middle school students. Participants enjoy physical activity, raise money to fight heart disease and stroke, and learn about heart health and volunteer service by participating in basketball skill games and tournaments.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the festivities at Glenmont began with 1st and 2nd grade students rotating through a series of skills stations, On Wednesday, 3rd grade students will take on the skill stations, and fourth graders will begin 3-on-3, round-robin tournament play. On Thursday, fifth graders would begin their 3-on-3 tournament, which would also be against some of the 16 teachers and staff members playing this year. The event lasts from 3:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 3:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Thursday.

“The kids are so excited,” said Kathi Davey, a Glenmont secretary who organizes the event with physical education teachers Laurie Nolan and Katie Charvat.
