District to explore Varsity sports attendance
practices
Release Date:
March 13, 2008
The Bethlehem Central School District Athletics Department has had a long-standing practice that allows Varsity level coaches to set expectations and standards for their teams and players. In some cases, this means that students must choose between participation on the team and engaging in other activities due to team attendance policies.
In light of community interest surrounding this issue following a Times-Union article this week, Dr. Loomis presented the Board of Education with additional information at its March 12 meeting and suggested that this was an opportune time to explore the Athletic Department’s student absence practices.
With regard to the particular issue raised this week, Dr. Loomis said that two students decided not to participate on varsity sports teams this spring, opting instead to go on a week-long church youth group-sponsored trip to Mississippi to rebuild areas destroyed by Hurricane Katrina over spring recess. Both athletes, and others who may have decided to participate in sports instead of attend the trip, were informed by their coaches at pre-season meetings that those who wished to be part of the team must be available over the week-long April break.
“We recognize that these are difficult choices for students and their families,” Superintendent Les Loomis said. “And, we respect students who decide to sacrifice a week of their vacation, and in some case their ability to play on a varsity team, to engage in worthwhile service activities."
But, Dr. Loomis said that while some have questioned if it is fair that these students miss an entire season because of their participation in the trip, it is important to point out that team sports require commitment, dedication, and sacrifice. The value in being part of a team is that the hard work and achievements of the unit are far greater than what one could accomplish individually.
He also noted that the district places great emphasis on community service, which is a requirement of the Participation in Government course taken by BCHS seniors.
Dr. Loomis concluded that “when questions are raised it’s our obligation to address them, be sensitive to the concerns of our community and, in the end, do what’s best for all students.”
To that end, Dr. Loomis suggested that Bethlehem Central High School Principal Chuck Abba and acting Athletic Director Ron Smith convene a committee of coaches to explore this issue. This committee is expected to recommend whether or not the district should consider another approach on the issue of individual coaches setting team policy with regard to student absences. Dr. Loomis and Mr. Abba will report to the Board by May 1.
Mr. Abba said that the committee will include parents, through the Bethlehem Central Athletic Association, and students in its discussions as it considers the issue.
