PBCHS students' civil war documentary takes a
gold in regional history day contest
Release Date: April 11, 2008
Five Bethlehem Central students won top prizes – including a prestigious State Archives award for a documentary about prisoners of war in the Civil War – in the recent Capital Region History Day Contest.
The winners, a team of three students and the pair who made the documentary, were among 55 Capital Region students who will advance to the state competition in Cooperstown on May 2 following the regional competition on March 29. The theme of this year’s contest, sponsored by the New York State Museum, is “Conflict and Compromise in History.”
The New York State Archive Partnership Trust presented BCHS juniors Sarah Aronson and Jessica Fiore with a special award for outstanding use of primary source materials and use of historical documents for their gold-medal winning documentary film, “We Shall Breathe Air Again: Prisoners of War in the Civil War.” The judges were impressed with the quality of the production and the research that was involved in making the movie.”
Bethlehem Central juniors Maggie Chu, Rachel Porter, and Kristen Yates also earned a gold medal in the category of Senior Group Exhibit for their exhibit titled, "Changing Perceptions: AIDS in America."
The student groups initiated the projects on their own, separate from their current coursework, with some advisement from BCMS Social Studies teacher Kristen Burns and former BC Social Studies teacher Imran Abbasi, now assistant principal at Cairo-Durham High School.
