Three Bethlehem Central High School seniors were been named semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship (NMS) Competition this month.

This year's semifinalists, Brendan Herrmann, Sarah Moylan, and Steven Nordhauser, earned the recognition based on several criteria, including academic performance, SAT scores, recommendations and their application.

They are among 16,000 students chosen from more than 1.4 million students in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools who entered by taking the 2006 PSATs as juniors. About 15,000 NMS semifinalists are expected to become finalists, who compete for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $34 million, to be offered in the spring for college undergraduate study.
