Peanut butter recall information
Release Date: Jan. 20, 2009
The district has received inquiries from several parents asking if peanut butter being held and recalled by several companies across the country due to reported cases of Salmonella Typhimurium was served in school cafeterias. The district has been assured by its suppliers that it did not have any of the tainted peanut butter in its kitchens or cafeterias at any time. The Food and Drug Administration's investigation into this Salmonella outbreak is ongoing. According to the FDA's Web site, it has traced the contamination to a plant owned by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), which manufactures both peanut butter and peanut paste—a concentrated product that is distributed to food manufacturers to be used as an ingredient in products such as cakes, cookies, crackers, candies, cereal and ice cream. On Friday, Jan. 16, the New York State Office of General Services assured the district its peanut butter was not affected by this situation. In addition, the district does not sell peanut butter snack crackers or cookies at the elementary school level. At the High School and the Middle School, the district carries two Mars company snack products. A call to the Mars hotline indicated that the company's peanut butter was not affected.
