BCHS Hall of Fame committee seeks nominees, electronically, for induction in 2009
Release Date: March 16, 2009
Wanted — a few great BC alumni.
The Bethlehem Central Hall of Fame Committee has again posted an online nomination form on the district’s Web site to allow alumni and community members a convenient way to submit candidates for possible induction in the Hall’s Class of 2009. The online nomination form is available on the district’s Web site and can be accessed by visiting http://bcsd.k12.ny.us/alumni/HOF.htm.
Bethlehem Central announced the creation of the Alumni Hall of Fame in the fall of 2004, after months of discussion between the district and community organization about the importance of recognizing graduates for their achievements after they leave BC. Selection will be based on the nominees’ accomplishments and significant contributions made in their careers and/or to the lives of others since graduation.
Hall of Fame classes of three inductees each were recognized at the 2005 and 2006 graduation ceremonies; Due to a lack of nominations, there was no Hall of Fame Class in 2007. Inductions resumed last year, with the admission of Bethlehem Police Detective Bruce Oliver.
“We have had some outstanding Hall of Fame members, and we’re excited about adding to that list,” said Scott Landry, Hall of Fame Committee chairman and assistant high school principal. “We are hoping for a large and diverse group of candidates to choose from, so I encourage everyone who knows of a BC alumnus deserving of this honor to submit their information for consideration.”
Those who do not have access to a computer or who wish to mail in their nomination should send their contact information as much biographical information about the candidate as possible to Landry at BCHS, 700 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054. He can also be reached by calling the High School’s main office at 439-4921 ext. 900.As in years past, the Hall of Fame Committee will field the nominations and make the selections. The committee is comprised of Bethlehem Central administrators, community members and staff members.
Nominations are due by May 1 for the 2009 induction, which will be inducted at this year’s BCHS commencement ceremonies on June 26.
The inaugural inductees who entered the Hall of Fame in 2005 were community activist Jo-Carol Block Davidson, '74; former president of NBC News Neal Shapiro, '76; and Captain Dennis E. Fitzpatrick, '76, commanding officer of the USS John F. Kennedy.
The Hall of Fame Class of 2006 was former New York State Supreme Court Justice Joseph R. Cannizzaro, '72, Richard Jadick, '83, an osteopathic physician who, as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, is credited with saving the lives of more than 30 Marines on a tour of duty in Iraq; and Eva Marie Saint, '42, an Academy Award-winning actress who played graceful leading ladies in many films starting in the 1950s.
Last year’s inductee, Detective Oliver, has been the full-time school resource officer assigned to the district for a decade. As a law enforcement official, educator, volunteer, coach and mentor, he makes a difference for BC students every day.
