BCSD discontinues Breakfast Program in elementary schools for second year
Due to low participation and increasing costs, the Bethlehem Central School District has again decided not to offer the Breakfast Program at its five elementary schools.
Elementary students arrive at school at 9 a.m. an inopportune time for such a program, according to Paul Franchini, BCSD Food Service Director, because by that time most students have eaten at home.
The cost of staffing the program has become disproportionate to the number of students it serves, he said.
“The history of this program over the years has been one of many tries but little gains,” said Franchini. “It is a program that just does not work well for our district and is actually costing us more in labor to keep it running and serving so few.”
