Mr. Trionfero asks Matt Wise, a fourth grader in Mrs. Ward’s class, what he would do in a tough situation at school. He had to answer honestly.
On Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 9:45 am, the students and teachers of Slingerlands School gathered in the auditorium and took part in the “Show of Love” assembly. This assembly is a part of our school’s character education program. The assembly was presented by Joe Trionfero.
The assembly started with music as we entered the gym. We sat in our seats and waited for the presentation to begin. The Show of Love assembly began with Mr. Trionfero discussing what is most imperative about respect, rules and responsibility. We learned that to be respectful, responsible, and follow rules, we need to be good listeners both in school and out of school. He showed us this by a few music games.

A few kids walk back to their seat after answering questions about responsibility. All the kids felt good and were smiling about answering the questions honestly.
First, we had to listen to the first 2 seconds of a song and we had to quietly raise our hand for the answer. Some of the songs included: Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana, Selena Gomez and a few others that the teachers answered that we did not know except for “Livin on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. After we figured out the songs, some kids were asked to join Mr. Trionfero at the head of the gym and were asked about their name, teacher and one rule in their classroom.
Next, we did the same activity but this time it was television show songs. Spongebob, Barney, iCarly and Law & Order (answered by the teachers) were some of the songs we listened to. Again, students were asked to go up to the front of the gym and explain to the audience one school rule we have that follows our motto, “Always Our Best.” Some students stated, no running on the wood chips, no spitting and waiting patiently in the lunch line.

Mr. Trionfero talking to the audience with kids waiting in the back, waiting to answer his questions about the school rules, like walking in halls. These rules keep us safe.
Kaila Taylor, a third grader from Mrs. Brands’ class stated, “I learned that you should always treat people the way you want to be treated."
Finally, we listened to movie songs that included, Harry Potter, The Lion King, Shark Tale, Monster’s Inc., Forest Gump and Romeo & Juliet. The students were then asked to answer what they would do in certain situations. We learned that honesty is always the best policy. We also learned that if you listen to people, they will listen to you and most importantly if you give respect, you will get respect. Mr. Trionfero also taught us that sometimes it’s more difficult to stand up to your friend than it is your enemy … and that’s the POWER OF ONE!

Mr. Trionfero is talking to 12 students about respect, responsibility and rules. When they stated a school rule, Mrs. Bonacquist gave them a thumb’s up when they stated a school rule.
“I liked when we listened to the music. I learned that I need to listen to my teachers and learned about what always our best means,” explained Sohalia Tiu, a first grader in Mrs. Monthie’s class.
The last part of the assembly had some teachers finish a quote. Mrs. Bonacquist also answered some of these like, “Actions speak louder than words.”
