2010-11 Course selection process getting underway
Posted: Jan. 29, 2010

The first steps in the development of student schedules for next year will begin the week of Feb. 1. Course selection day will take place this Monday, February 1st. On this day all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students will discuss with their current teachers course options available for the 2010-2011 school year. Teachers will review courses that are available in their discipline and then confirm student course selections. Students will give their course selection sheet to their last period teacher. Teachers will forward all course selection sheets to the Counseling Center. Over the next two weeks students will meet individually with their counselors and complete a tentative schedule. Ninth graders will meet on February 4th; 10th graders on February 11th; and 11th graders on February 10th. Students will leave their physical education classes for these meetings on those days. Students will bring home the tentative schedule for parent review and signature and then return the signed schedule to their homeroom on February 12th.

The BCHS Course Curriculum Handbook, which is available here as a PDF, is a good way for families to learn more about all BCHS course options. Please take the time to review the required courses and elective offerings from each department. Subject supervisors have been highlighting the variety of courses available to our students. The following is an example of these types of presentations:

Family and Consumer Science Offerings

Students in Family and Consumer Science have the option to take electives that give them the opportunity to explore the Culinary Arts and Child and Family Studies. Such courses include:

Culinary Arts I: an introductory class where students learn food management, preparation skills, nutrition, sanitation and safety.
Culinary Arts II: a baking class (Culinary Arts I is required to take this class).

Gourmet Foods: students learn many different cooking techniques such as making candy, garnishing, using herbs and spices, and more.

Regional and International Foods: students look traditional foods and culture in all the regions of the USA and 5 – 8 countries.

Child Development and Psychology and Early Childhood Education: can earn students transcript credit from SUNY Cobleskill while they learn about the growth and development of children prenatally through early childhood. We include as much observation and participation with children as possible.

Adolescent Psychology: students study adolescent development as well as many issues that children from 11- 21 deal with.
Family Psychology: students study the family unit and its affect on individuals.

Social Psychology: students study how individuals think, feel, and behave in a social context.

Independent Living: students learn to look at all the responsibilities they will soon be taking on: paying bills, apartment hunting, and dealing with roommate issues.

If you have any further questions feel free to contact your child’s guidance counselor or Family and Consumer Science teacher J. Smith at the high school.

During the course selection process do not hesitate to contact the subject supervisors or your student’s counselor. You can find contact information for the academic departments here and the Counseling Center here
