Empty Bowls event set for March 28
Students for Peace and Survival will sponsor the popular Empty Bowls event on Friday, March 28 from 5-7 p.m. in the BCHS cafeteria. Members of the group, along with the Art Club, have been making bowls and faculty, staff, and students will make soup for the fundraising event. For $10, community members receive a student made bowl and all the soup and bread (made by some of our students and donated by Bountiful Bread.) Proceeds benefit Community Gardens and the Regional Food Bank.
BC Odyssey Teams Sweep Region 7 Competition!
On Saturday, March 1, six teams from Bethlehem participated in the Region 7 Odyssey of the Mind competition held at Shenendehowa High School. Every team placed, bringing home three 1st place awards and three 2nd place awards. The 1st place teams from Hamagrael Elementary and Bethlehem Central Middle School will compete in the NY Odyssey State Competition on April 12 at Binghamton University. READ MORE & VIEW PHOTOS »
2014 Board of Education Election is May 20
There will be three Board of Education seats on the ballot in the 2014 election, which will take place on the date of the budget vote, May 20, 2014. Nominating petitions will be available from the district clerk beginning Monday, March 3. Petitions must be obtained in person. LEARN MORE »
Preliminary budget reveals $4.8 million gap; full GEA restoration could fill bulk of shortfall
The Board of Education began public discussion of the 2014-15 Bethlehem Central School District budget at its meeting on Feb. 26 with a look at preliminary budget figures which show an estimated gap of $4.8 million for the coming school year.
“This is a starting point,” said Superintendent Dr. Thomas J. Douglas. “We have tools to help close this gap and those tools will be the subject of our discussions moving forward.” READ MORE »
Recap of Common Core In The Classroom
To help parents better understand what our curriculum looks like to students in the classroom under the state’s new Common Core Learning Standards, on Feb. 10, teachers at the elementary, middle and high school level described new aspects of the curriculum, such as writing and close reading in ELA to algorithms and fractions in Math. Governor’s budget proposal touts aid increases, but GEA cuts result in a decrease in aid for BC
In Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed 2014-15 Executive Budget, released last week, Bethlehem would see an overall increase in aid of $113,548 – or 0.5% – but would still face an overall loss, due to the GEA, of more than $3.46 million. READ MORE »

Residents asked to call on state leaders to end GEA
More than 1,000 people packed into Colonie Central High School on Thursday, Jan. 30 to hear students, teachers and school district leaders describe how deep aid cuts from the state have impacted schools in the Capital Region, and 80 of these concerned citizens were from Bethlehem Central.
The Bethlehem Central School District is now asking residents to join the effort to let state leaders and area legislators know that the Bethlehem Central School District and its property taxpayers can no longer absorb huge losses in state aid. READ MORE »

Kindergarten registration information
Kindergarten registration information was mailed to all eligible families currently in the Bethlehem Central database. If you did not receive a kindergarten registration packet, please fill out a Preschool Student Information Form for your child and registration materials will be mailed to you. If you had not previously done this, your child would not be in the BCSD database. Contact District Registrar Melissa Haas at (518) 439-2442 if you have any questions.
