Global Coalition News ....

On October 26, 2011, Students in School #825 in Moscow, Russia and in Bethlehem Central Middle School, Delmar, NY, USA met each other for the first time using Skype.  Because of the time difference, students in New York arrived early to school at 7:00am while their Russia partners remained after school at 3:00pm.  They spent an hour discussing their cultures and their interests.  It is through such interactions that friendships are formed in our Global Coalition.

Dec., 2009:   An Editorial on Sino-Indian Relations by Aparajita Pandey   Sino – India Relations loosening?

One of India’s attempts to establish cordial relations with China was the signing of the Peace Treaty called Panchsheel in 1954 but this was proved worthless and a failure soon in 1962 when China waged a surprise war against its peace partner, India. The Sino-India relations have been deteriorating since then till date.

Many reasons/factors have acted as bitter gourd that added bitterness in the “once cordial relationship” between India and China.  When china gained control over Tibet, it tried to bring a cultural revolution in Tibet and harassed the religious-minded and peace loving Tibetans.  The Tibetan’s spiritual leader Dalai Lama and his followers were then forced to migrate to India. They found shelter in Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh which was resented by the Chinese government. Even Dalai Lama’s recent visit to Tawang sparked off a controversy. the Chinese government wanted to prevent his visit by saying that he was encouraging a separatist movement.

Also the Chinese maps show Arunachal Pradesh (a north-east state in India) as a part of China. In the 1950’s Pandit Nehru asked the then President of China to rectify the mistake. But it seems the mistake was deliberate and has not been changed till date.  The close relationship between China and Pakistan brought a great deal of anxiety to India. China’s growing friendship with India’s old enemy, Pakistan definitely affected the Sino-India relations.  The recent water dispute over river Brahmaputra is seen as a political tool that the Chinese government can use for bargaining with India.

Even though there are so many unresolved issues of conflict between the two countries, they are trying to re-build the faith and trust. While the Joint Working Groups in both the countries are trying to sort out the pending issues, the two nations are also establishing healthy economic relations. The Chinese goods have flooded the Indian markets and many Indian goods are a huge craze in China.  Well I hope that the Sino-India relations grow strong in the future and the reach the pinnacle of development through mutual cooperation and support.

St. Marks Students Organize Rally

November, 2009, New Delhi India

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME

by Aastha Dhingra+

The students of St. Mark’s Girls Sr. sec School, New Delhi, conducted a rally under the mission ‘Joy of Giving’ to educate those children who are underprivileged. It was held to stop child labour and to educate them.

Girls from classes VII and VIII participated eagerly. They carried placards and spoke to people for a social cause which was to stop child labour and give each child below the age of 14 years, his fundamental right of being educated. The excitement and joy was seen on the faces of  those who were ready to lend a helping hand to their counterparts. The participants talked to the shopkeepers and nearby residents very politely and patiently explaining their aim and objective behind the rally. They tried to convince the people to stop child labour. The rally was successful as a lot of people showed inclination and interest towards this charitable cause when told that children living in poverty can study in the evening and the classes held for them would be free of cost as they can’t afford it. The main aim was that their childhood shouldn’t be snatched away from them, and to educate them to be a better human being. The children were happy as they had made an attempt to improve the condition of their peers.

December 1, 2008

A student reacts to the attacks in Mumbai

Change- changing season, changing times and changing ourselves. Change is the word of the month that just passed. Reporting from India the news that follows is all about changes we have made, incidents that have changed us and the changes we have decided to make in our attitude.

The evening of 8th and 9th of November 2008 came alive at St. Mark's Sr. Sec. School, Meera Bagh as it held its Cultural Fiesta - 'Rang Tarang'. The evenings were the perfect fusion of music, dance and colour. There were folk dances from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Bengal, Kerala and Maharashtra alongwith the classical dance forms Bharatnatyam and Kathak. Music ranged from the traditional Sufi to the western beats. The colourful costumes and the colour splash by the students created a beautiful rainbow. The graceful moments by the students made the ballet 'Sainani' very memorable.

This month we had our city polls in Delhi on 29th November. People voted with full vigour and a sense of responsibility and exercised their right to vote and change their leaders.

I am a person who likes and revels in change - if things stay the same for too long, I get restless. I'd hate to live in a place where the weather is the same, so you don't know if you're in March or May. Delhi with its four definite seasons and a different mood for every month just suits me.

Winters have just set in.

The winters are marked by mist and fog in the mornings and often sun is seen in the afternoons. The cold wave from the Himalayan region makes winters very chilly

India showed its true potential and ability in cricket this month, leading an ODI series 5-0 against England. But the last two matches were called off due to the Mumbai terror attacks.

It’s sad to see and report this but a news reporter is a person built on the fundamentals of reporting truth at any cost.

Multiple sites in the Indian city of Mumbai were attacked with bombs and gunfire in a coordinated terror attack on November 26, 2008.

But all was cleared on 29th November by the brave army men of our country and ended the difficult times for ‘The city of Dreams’.

Ending this article here for the month of November with the buzz word or word of the month-CHANGE, here is a quote for all the readers by Jimmy Carter:

“We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”

MASLENITSA

We go to school six days out of seven that’s why we usually want to sleep longer on Sunday. But not this time! You want to know why? Because of Maslenitsa. That’s a Russian festival on the last day of the Pancake week when people get together on some square to sing chastooshkas (merry songs), play the garmoshka (Russian folks accordion), eat bliny (pancakes) and other tasty things and the end to burn Maslenitsa – the symbol of the cold winter – a big stuffed rag doll. After Maslenitsa is burnt, people think that frosty winter is over and soon sunny days are coming, messengers of the spring.

I went to see Maslenitsa festival with my dad and cousin and take some pictures. This year we went to the Bell Tower square. The parking place was full of cars. People were having fun on the tubing hill, met their friends and went to watch performers playing games and singing songs.

We wanted to see everything better and bought tickets to clime spiral stairs on top of the Bell Tower to take a bird's eye view of all the merriments at the foot of the tower. It was really great fun; however it was pretty cold upstairs and frosty wind made us hurry down to have a cup of tea and some hot pancakes.

I wish you were there with me!

SKI TRACK OF RUSSIA 2007

In Russia, the best way to enjoy the snowy winter is to go skiing at the weekend! You can go with your friends or family and you can also make a picnic around the bonfire and grill some sausages.

Quite different thing is when you can join other ski freaks and share excitement of fun races together with hundreds or even thousands of enthusiasts! On February 11, 2007 mass ski races called “Ski Track of Russia” were held for the second time in Zlatoust. Everyone could run a race for free when he gets registered and gets his individual number. The distance for school students was only 2 km., and at the finish line everybody got a prize – a nice ski cap that said SKI TRACK OF RUSSIA 2007. You can see everything in the pictures. The weather was great. A lot of sun and it wasn’t cold at all. I was very happy. My friends were happy too!

News from Portugal ...............................   January, 2007

January, 2007

A fishing vessel has capsized in rough waters off Portugal's Atlantic coast leaving two crewmen dead and four missing.

Of the seven crew members on board the Luz do Sameiro when it sank near the central fishing village of Nazare, (not far from Caldas da Rainha) one was rescued by an air force helicopter.

The helicopter was searching for the four missing crew members with the aid of several boats.

Rescuers encountered 2.5-metre-high waves while the temperature of the water was 16 degrees Celsius according to the national weather office.

The  fishing boat “Luz do Sameiro” with seven crew on board sunk close to shore in Nazare area apparently when recovering fishing nets, the score at the moment are Black, three dead, three missing and one man recovered alive, search and rescue operations still undergoing by Portuguese Navy and other rescue corporations. First some psychological and financial help must be given to the dead fishermen families, and after some questions must be answered such as, why a fishing boat was so close to shore, apparently recovering fishing nets in a forbidden area, what kind of means the boat used to call for help VHF (CH 70) or other and why the rescue helicopter took so long to arrive on the accident scene?

As usual all kind of voices starts to shout out loud to blame this and that, looking for reasons and causes for such accident, from experts and less experts on the matter to the common people all gave their opinion about such serious accident.

The Dakar rally started in Lisbon this year:

From 6th to 20th January 2007 Crossing of Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal.  It’s more than 4000 miles in the desert for cars, trucks and motorcycles. The Lisbon-Dakar is one of the greatest rallies in the world.

The Dakar is a race, the toughest rally in the World: over two weeks of hard work and thousands of kilometres over various tracks. Each year since 1979, crews including men and women, enjoy an intense rivalry in the middle of the desert. The final result always rewards an incredible winner. Indeed, more than elsewhere, success on a Dakar comes from a synthesis between performance, determination and regularity.

Beyond the borders of victory, the real essence of a Dakar is the challenge. A competitor battles both with the others but also with himself, in a context where humility is just as important as going beyond oneself. With objectives that match their capabilities, the candidates in this adventure have in common this search for balance.

News of PortugalInternet Threats

Warning  Protect your computer against Hackers and dangers of the Internet!

What are they? Internet threats are infected files. These files will infect your computer or devices (like PDA). These threats are created by computer maniacs. They are called by Hackers, Hijacks and Crackers.

How many kinds are there and what can they do?

Virus: very common. Normally comes in downloads and e-mail. They come in emails, files, downloads, Instant Messenger (I.M.), worms, Malicious ActiveX and Scripts. And don’t forget the Trojans Horses, they are very powerful. These kind of threats damage your computer, hard disk, memory and portable devices. When they infect your computer, they multiply and send e-mails with worms (Hostile Worm Activity). Your contacts will open the infected e-mail, and their computers will be infected. These kind of threats are very common with the increase of anti-virus sales. To remove it use an anti-virus.

Spyware: the most recent threat. The first one was made in 1999 (I think). This kind of threat comes in programs, e-mail and downloads. They spy your computer and portable device, what you do and your system programs and defense tools. If your defense tools are weak, he shall attack you. Lots of people don’t have anti-spyware. This kind of threat begins to be very, very common. An anti-spyware solves the problem.

Adware: the same stuff of a spyware. There are only two differences.

One: this kind of threats, normally are good. They come with software such as Download Accelerator Plus 6 (DAP). They are good because they send information about your computer and how you work (like this computer uses Pentium 133 MHz).

Two: some kind of adware is bad because they spy you and your files, they reduce your computer performance, they control your computer and damage your computer and programs.

Malware: the same stuff of a spyware and adware.

Hacker: the most powerful threat. They are very rare. You will find him in everywhere, in downloads, e-mail, files, all... He controls your computer and information; damage all kind of devices and computers, spy you, reduce your system performance, he can do everything... He attacks all devices and computers. A fire-wall is the minimum required. You got to use a very good Internet Security Suite like Norton Internet Security Suite.

Phishing: he steals our identity. A phishing-filter will be better.

Crack: he makes illegal copies of software crack the trial and shareware days’ protection.

Internet junk and spam: blast of pop-up windows, publicity and junk mail.

To remove this junk you got to use a pop-up blocker, an anti-spam and a publicity blockeThe Internet threats in a tree

For the next project is about Defense Tools. There’s an advice: buy Norton Internet Security 2006 for full protection, but be careful, Norton I.S. uses a lot of memory and performance of your computer. To install, I recommend a computer with:

-800 MHz of processor speed

-512 MB of RAM

-Windows XP

If you can’t buy an Internet Security Suite, use free defense tools like:

-AVG Anti-Virus Free 7.0

-Windows Defender 2.0 Beta or Spyware Doctor 2.8 of Symantec

-Zone Labs Zone Alarm Firewall or Windows Firewall

To install these programs you need a computer with:

-500 MHz of processor speed

-448 MB of RAM

-Windows 2000 or higher

Well, bye. And don’t forget to be protected!

October 2006..... Belize....

Also this month the local community started to pick shade grown  coffee here on the farm.  The picking season lasts from October until just before Christmas however, heavy rains this year may cause the coffee productions to be low.  The coffee is shade grown as we said which means that the forest is still above the coffee plants so birds and other animals can remain there.  This is a sustainable way to grow coffee.

That is all from Gallon Jug.

HIGHSCHOOL ON-LINE AT GALLON JUG!!!!!

 ....October 5, 2006

This is a picture of the high school when it was just started to be built. It was built by workers or carpenters of the company at gallon jug. The workers were paid by Mr. Barry, the owner of Gallon Jug. It took the workers approximately one week to complete the first step

A few days after the above picture was completed this is what the high school looked like in appearance. The floor was completed and the building started to look like an original building.
Long days of worked passed and this is the result of the worker’s efforts. The building was almost done and the only thing that was missing was some other additions so that it would finally be completed.
This is the accomplishments of the workers, donors, Mr. Bowen teachers, students and the students of Bethlehem middle school in New York! It is an accomplishment that will help all the community in many ways.
Now we are finally two weeks away from going online!

Earth Quake in Jogjakarta

On Saturday the twenty seventh of May, at 5:54 AM everyone in Jogja was still at home. Sleeping, eating, and other things to do in the morning. But then something happened. It shaked Jogja. It was a 5,9 scale ritcher earth quake. The earth quake came from the Parantritis sea. Many people died, many people hurt. But then an issue of tsunami was heard. Everybody ran. They were afraid of the tsunami. But the issue was not right. Some people who were saved from the earth quake died because of the tsunami issue.
Lucky them, some people from other coutries came and helped them to make a better live for them. They gave food, drinks, clothes, and other things they needed.
But the children in Jogja was late for the national tests. It was canceled because of the earth quake. But the people from other countries made an emergency school. The people refreshed the children's mind. Then they started the national tests.
I heard a story about a family who were gong to jogja for vacation. But when the earth quake happened, only one of the family member was still alive.
so on the school assembly, my class performed a poetry and a song titled "You Are Not Alone". Why did my class sing that song? Because it shows that our friend in Jogja is not alone. They still have us. Though I'm far away and you're far away. The song says
" You are not alone
I am here with you
Though were far away
I am here to stay".
The song is right. Though they're far away, we are here to stay.
That's the end of my story.
SEE YOU!

                     MARKET DAY

On 2 December, in Madania, our grade (fourth grade) were having a market day. The sellers were us and the buyers were the other graders. In each class the students were divided into 4 groups that consists of 6 students. Each group sold many things.
My group sold key chains, paper soap, photo frame, stationary, cakes, and accessories. The other group sold food, accessories, stationary, and many other things. My group sold out some things like photo frame, cakes, paper soap, and key chain.
Because we had the market day at the class, so the class was so full of buyers. My friend named Pritta, brought a tape recorder so the buyers could enjoy some music.
There was some accidents when we were selling.
Before we can't bargain. Then my friend named Zakky had a buyer. The buyer wanted to buy a thing from Zakky. The real price of that  thing is
1000 rupiah but the buyer bargain into Rp. 500. First Zakky didn't let the buyer to buy the thing for Rp. 500 but then he let the buyer. So then he got less profit.
My profit was Rp. 26.500. The biggest profit in my group was Pritta's profit (Rp 39000).

I think that's the end of my report and will meet again at the next report.

Ramadhan newsletter from Indonesia

                     Ramadhan

This month is the Ramadhan month. In this month the Muslim people have fasting.
Fasting is an exercise to test our patience. If we are fasting we can't be angry cause that will make our fasting broke.
Fasting is not eating and not drinking from subuh to maghrib or around 4:00 until 18:00.
But before we fast, early in the morning we have a meal. That meal is called Sahur.
My family and I usually wake up at 3:00 for sahur.
Imsak is the time that tells that the time for Sahur is over.
During waiting the Maghrib, I usually watch TV, play video games, draw, or sometimes if I am tired I take a nap.
Maghrib is the time for broking the fasting.
When it's Maghrib I drink mineral water first, then I eat some cookies. Some minutes later, I eat a meal of rice and chicken.
My father said if I fast 1 for month , he will give me Rp 30.000 (Indonesian money) because I already fasted for 1 month/30 days.

That's my article about my activities on Ramadhan at home . See you on the next article!

Halo Iam Shilla. I am going to report about
MADANIA BASEBALL TEAM

Shilla swinging at the ball

In the madania baseball team there are some leagues.  T-ball, minor, little, senior, and softball.
On the tournament pelajar 2005, the T-ball, minor, little, and softball league is going to the final match.

I am one of the player in the minor league.  The minor league have won the first place for 2 times.

On the final match the minor league had to face the highscope team again.
The highscope team had took 2 ecxellent players from Prambors team to win from us.
The players that had been taken areIcad and Harsa.
They are the most ecxellent players in Prambors.

The match was ready.  They tried so hard to win from us.

But in the end, one of my friend feet was hurt.
So the umpire decided to stop the game.
That time the score was 17-1.
So Madania won the game.

So even Icad and Harsa had been taken by highscope, they still cannot win from us.

So now Madania had won the tournament.
That was the third time Madania minor league won the first place.

These are the result from the match:
T-ball: Everybody is a winner (madania - gamer)
Minor: First place (Madania - highscope)
Little: Second place (madania - gamer)
Softball:first place (madania - tarlim)

That's the end of My report.
See you,

Hurricane Rita Report: September 24th, 2005

By Ian D.

Another major hurricane, called Hurricane Rita, hit parts of the Gulf coast of the U.S.A. on Saturday, September 24th, 2005. Even though Hurricane Rita caused floods and damage to homes and buildings in the states of Texas and Louisiana, the people who lived there were still thankful because the damage was not as bad as the destruction of Hurricane Katrina a few weeks ago.

Before Hurricane Rita hit, almost 3 million people left their homes to find shelter away from the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. Some people who stayed in their houses needed to be rescued by boat or helicopter. The harm done by Hurricane Rita included loss of power to over a million people, many fires, and major flooding. Luckily, Hurricane Rita did not cause deaths (as of Saturday) while Hurricane Katrina caused more than 1,000 deaths. Let’s hope there will be no more big hurricanes this season.

A visit to the Camel Park in CYPRUS

Today 10th November 2004 we went on a school trip to Mazotos. Mazotos is a village in Larnaca, not too far from the seaside. We visited the camel park there.

We had a very nice time playing and looking at the camels. The baby camels were very pretty. Someone who works there talked to us about camels. It was very interesting.

 Did you know that:

-         when thirsty a camel can drink 200 litres of water?

-         a camel can go 10 days without food or drink?

-         a camel can carry 300 kilos?

-         a camel can drink sea water?

Cyprus Joins the EU

Submitted 5/11/04

On Monday 3rd May 2004 we celebrated Cyprus’ entry to the European Union. The school was decorated with large paintings hanging from the windows and the veranda rails. Each painting represented one of our partner countries in our Socrates programme. At the end of the day all the pupils gathered in the school hall and after a brief introduction by the Headteacher, we sang songs about friendship and peace. A big success was the song “Amicos para siempre” which we sang in Greek. Later on, we all went outside in the school yard and we released blue and yellow balloons decorated with the EU stars. Each balloon had either a flag tied on it or a message. There were balloons for all the 25 European Union country flags and balloons with various messages such as love, peace and solidarity. All of us stayed outside watching the balloons disappear into the sky.

USA 2004 Presidential Election: the Poll Tells the Tale

By: Peixuan in USA: May, 2004

As you already know, 2004 is an election year. Even though the election is in November, the race for the title is already raging. Both democratic John Kerry and republican George W Bush started their campaign. So did Ralph Nadar, but being an independent candidate, only a small percentage seems to like him.

In a recent poll done by Siena Research Institute and posted on Times Union, a popular newspaper, it looks like New Yorkers prefer Kerry as their next president rather than Bush. Out of 625 registered voters, a solid 51% would vote for John Kerry if the election were today. Only 32% would vote for Bush. Nadar only came up with 1% and scores of people (15%) is still not sure. If Bush wants to win the state of New York in the election, he must get all of those undecided people and more.

That was the general election, but in small focuses such as the economy and health care, people still prefer Kerry. If the election were based on economy, Kerry wins easily by 20%. If it was education, Kerry would win by more than 15%. If it was the environment, Kerry would win with ease with a margin of 22%. In foreign relations, Kerry wins again. If it were based on health care, Bush looses by a lot. If it was about same sex marriages, Bush still comes up short. Bush still looses if it was based on social security. He would loose by a hair if it were based on the war in Iraq. However, Bush would finally beat Kerry if the election were based on the war on terror and the Israel and Palestinian conflict.

USA 2004 Presidential Election: the Three Candidates

  By: Peixuan, May 2004

Democrat’s candidate in the 2004 presidential election has been decided! Senator John Kerry will run against George Bush in the 2004 presidential election.

There will be three candidates running for president in the 2004 election. They are George Walker Bush of the Republicans, John Kerry of the Democrats, and Ralph Nader of Green Party. The three candidates now must campaign and tell everyone across the America about their plans.

George W. Bush is currently the president of United States, but that does not guarantee that he will be the winner of the 2004 presidential election. He has done a lot to keep his president title. In economy, he signed a law that will help job growth. In health care, he is improving health security by building on new great features. In education, he signed a “leave no child behind” law. In this law, he will try to increase the overall student performances. This is just a small part of his agenda book. For more information, visit http://www.georgewbush.com.

John Kerry’s plans include restoring lost jobs and rebuilding the economy, making peace with Iraq, and to make college affordable. Visit http://www.johnkerry.com for more details.

Ralph Nader is part of the Green Party, a second-class party. However, he is not running under it. He is running as an independent candidate, someone who is not in a party. He opposes both the Republicans and the Democrats. He thinks that “The Bush Administration and the Democratic Party, in varying extremes, are putting the interests of their corporate paymasters before the interests of the people” (http://www.votenader.org). Visit http://votenader.org for more details.

Democrat’s Candidate in 2004 Presidential Election

By: Peixuan G    March: 2004

Every four years in America, there is a presidential election. This is when one candidate from each of the two big parties: Republican and Democrat run against each other to become the next president of the United States.

There will be a presidential election this year in November. The Republicans will nominate George Walker Bush, who is the president right now. The Democrats have yet to choose someone. There are 9 Democrats battling for the nomination, but five of them have dropped out. To be nominated, they must get 2,161 out of 4,321 Democratic delegates to vote for you.

Right now, Senator John Kerry is in the lead with 613 votes. He is exactly 411 votes ahead of Howard Dean, who is in second place, but he dropped out. Although John Edwards is in third place with 192 votes, he is really second since Dean dropped out. Clark, who has already dropped out have 57 votes. Sharpton and Kucinich are in last place of everyone who have not dropped out. They only have 18 votes combined. Gephardt, Leberman, and Braun have all dropped out and are on the bottom with 0 votes each.

In my opinion, Sharpton and Kucinich will probably not win the nomination, because they are so far behind. However, Edwards still might have a chance even though he is behind. John Kerry on the other hand, have the most chances of winning. That is because he is leading by more than 350 votes and have been winning a lot lately.

In conclusion, Kerry has a large lead and will probably win, but Edwards can still make a big comeback. Sharpton and Kucinich might, but probably will not make any comebacks.

The Super Bowl is the biggest football game of the year. Also the most important. It is when the NFC league champion [the panthers] play the AFC  champion [the Patriots] play each other. The Winner will be - the NFL champion.
The Patriots proved they could beat co-mvp Peyton Manning and his Colts last Sunday when they put on a great performance to win 24 -14. Tom Brady, the Patriot quarterback, went 22 for 37 and had 237 passing yards. The Patriots for the second time in 3 years have won the AFC and are going to the super bowl.

Going into the NFC championship no one was giving the Panthers a chance. Then again why would we have to give them a chance? They were 1-15 2 seasons ago. They were a joke. But then came ex-Giant defensive coordinator John Fox. Last year they improved their record to 7-9. And this year they not only got into the playoffs but they beat Mc Nabb and his Eagles to get into the Super Bowl. Jake Delhomme needs to step it up in order to beat the Patriots. He went 9 for 14 for 101 yards.  As I said he is nothing compared to Tom Brady.

For more information go to http://www.nfl.com \ or http://www.superbowl.com/.

Have a good Super Bowl and then it is on to pro basketball.

sADDAM HUSSEIN FOUNd December, 2003

By: Peixuan G

Former Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein was on the run and hiding from the US for more than nine months. He was still not caught until now.

On December 13, 2003, a tremendous victory for United States took place. Saddam Hussein was captured by Sanchez and his troops. Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez and his troops searched two different cities in Iraq for Saddam and one of them was Tikrit. The soldiers searched very hard and they came through a spider hole. The spider hole had a fan and an air hole. And in it was the former dictator of Iraq. In it was Saddam Hussein.

Saddam Hussein was different from what we would have expected. He didn’t have any weapons with him, and when he saw the Americans, he gave up without struggling. Saddam was then brought back to US for DNA tests and health tests. The health tests proved that Saddam was very healthy and the DNA tests confirmed that this man really is Saddam Hussein.

Many people across America were watching the special news report on TV on the capture of Saddam Hussein, and they were overjoyed as “we got him” was said. When the Cab driver James John was on duty, he heard about the capture of Saddam on the radio. "It’s a good thing,” he said. "He was a bad man." Another American Rachel Quarshie of Dallas Texas said, "I would like to say 'eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth' but that's not right. I'd like to just see him break bricks for the rest of his life.” However, Pika Patel of Chicago, Illinois was not as forgiving as Rachel Quarshie. Instead of making him break bricks for the rest of his life she said, "Just kill him. No trial."

Louisiana Elects Its First Female Governor

Ever since Louisiana became a state in 1812, there had not been a female governor. That will change now. Louisiana just elected its first female governor.

Democrat Kathleen Babineaux Blanco had become the first female governor with 730,737 votes. Her opponent, Bobby Lindal had 676,180 votes. She beat him by just 4%. "The people of Louisiana have spoken. We have sent a new message out to the nation -- that this is a new Louisiana," Blanco said.

Before becoming the governor, Blanco was a high school teacher and a stay at home mom of 6 children

Giants are Humilliated By Their Loss to Falcons

Falcons (a football team) are on a 7 game losing streak, they're the worst team in the NFL, worst defense in the NFL and their star quarterback is injured. How can they defeat the Giants (a different football team)?

Even with the worst defense in the NFL, the Falcons forced four turnovers and only one touchdown, while their offense had no turnovers and three touchdowns. New York lost 7 to 21. It was a very embarrassing day for the Giants who are 4 wins and 5 losses.

Sports Report - By David USA

November 2003

In my opinion this is the best part of the American football season if your team doesn’t make it in the playoffs. After the next 5 weeks you will either be on vacation or having 20 reporters crowding around you asking you how you think your NFL team will do in the playoffs. Here are the current standings:

AFC

AFC East      AFC North                  AFC South      AFC West

New England 9-2 Baltimore 6-5 Indianapolis 9-2 Kansas city 10-1

Miami  7-4 Cincinnati 6-5 Tennessee 9-2 Denver   6-5

Buffalo 4-7 Cleveland 4-7 Houston 4-7 Oakland  3-8

New York jets 4-7 Pittsburgh 4-7 Jacksonville 2-9 San Diego  2-9

NFC

NFC East     NFC North        NFC South      NFC West

Dallas  8-3 Minnesota 7-4 Carolina 8-3 ST Louis 8-3

Philadelphia 8-3 Green Bay 6-5 New Orleans 5-6 Seattle  7-4

N.Y giants 4-7 Chicago 4-7 Tampa Bay 5-6 San Frisisco 5-6

Washington 4-7 Detroit  3-8 Atlanta  2-9 Arizona 3-8

Look out for those close divisions. Better luck next year for teams under .500. My superbowl prediction…  Cincinnati over Cowboys. Cast your vote. I will write the results on December 1st.

Poland celebrates its Independence Day.

In 1795, the neighbors of the Kingdom of Poland, Russia, Prussia and
Austria, finished the enterprise they had begun in 1773 and ultimately
divided the Polish lands, incorporating them into themselves. Thus Poland
disappeared for over a century from the maps of the world. The whole 19th
century is but one long story of bloody uprisings, none of which was
successful. It was only the First World War that brought defeat for Austria
and Germany, and Russia transformed into the Soviet Union. In this
situation, at the end of the war, on 11 November 1918, Poland regained its
independence after 123 years. Nowadays it is the most important national
holiday in our country, although because of strange historical implications
we could not celebrate it between 1945 and 1989.

Independence Day in Poland is not celebrated in the way it is in other
countries, like the US for example. We mostly have military parades,
concerts, patriotic ceremonies and on TV there are mainly historical
documentaries.
