Bill Reilly's Letter of Introduction

Greetings New Friends!,

I am Bill Reilly.  I would like to tell you some interesting facts about myself.  I live in a small house on a lake, with my wife Hilary.   We have two sons, Shane and David.  They are grown up and live on their own.  We have two dogs, Droop, a Basset hound and Rudy, a Beagle mix.

On our lake we have a flock of geese, lots of fish, some muskrats and a great blue heron.   Sometimes ospreys and eagles circle overhead.  This winter we had a mountain lion and a bear near our house.  One of my favorite activities is to sail or row around the lake in my small boat.

We live near Delmar, New York which is approximately 250 kilometers north from New York City.  It is next to our capital of Albany, New York.  There are many mountains nearby.  I like to visit the museums in New York City and go hiking in the mountains.  I also like to travel.  In the past few years I have visited Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Belize, Greece, Italy, Paris, Mexico, Ireland, Bermuda and Costa Rica.  I like to travel because I am an archaeologist and like to see ancient sites.  I also love to see wildlife.  In Belize, Hilary and I had the privilege of visiting Gallon Jug School and meeting Teacher Mike and many students who participate in this project.  Last October I was able to visit Azerbaijan.  In 2005, I had the privilege of visiting with Sophie and her students in Cyprus.  In April 2007 I visited Cecilia and her students in Rome.

When I am home, I like to listen to music and watch movies.  I listen to all sorts of music.  My favorite classical musician is Beethoven, but I also like Jazz and modern groups.  U2 is my favorite!  My favorite movie of all time is “Braveheart" and the Pirates of the Caribbean.

My favorite subjects are history and archaeology.   I love to learn about past civilizations and to discover how people live in different parts of the world.  I think we can learn a lot about ourselves from our past and from each other.

My other interest is our environment.  I am very concerned about our world today.  It worries me that we are getting overpopulated and destroying much of our environment.  I find it very disturbing that some people in the world have so much, while other people don’t have enough to eat.  It also concerns me that so many animal species are being killed off.  I would like to know how people in other parts of the world feel about these issues.  I would like to know what bothers them most about the world, and what solutions they could offer to help solve these problems.  This is the reason that I work on the “Global Coalition” project.  I see it as a means of bringing people around the world together to work for a better world for all of us.

I hope other teachers and students find these issues of interest and will work on our website to express their ideas about global issues.  I think it will serve as an interesting exchange of ideas and could possibly lead to some solutions.

Take care and looking forward to hearing from you.

Your new friend,

Bill Reilly
