Cultures and Traditions: Ireland

Ireland's National Sport

Hello to all our new friends,

We are going to tell you about one of our National sports here in Ireland.  It is called hurling.  It is played with a hurley which is kind of like a hockey stick.  The hurley is made of wood from the Ash tree.  The ball is the size of a tennis ball.  It is called a sliothar.  It is made of leather with rubber or string inside.  Helmets, like ice hockey ones are worn by lots of players.
It is played on a grass surface about the size of a rubgy field. It is about 150m long and about 100m wide. The goals are like a rubgy goals.  Points and goals can be scored.  A goal is worth three points.  There are 15 players on each team.
Games can be 60 or 70 mins long, divided into 2 halves.
A ball can be hit from the ground or out of your hand.  It is a very skillful game.
