Glenmont 'Buddy Program' reveals a class of great character
Release Date: January 21, 2010

Students in Glenmont's buddy program

Students in Mrs. Klugman's first grade class nominated their buddies in Mr. Kourt's fifth grade class for the Board of Education Character Award.

Board of Education member Laura Bierman talks to Glenmont students

Board of Education member Laura Bierman visited Glenmont in early January to congratulate students on the Character Award.

From help with writing assignments to the school's Healthy Steps exercise program, Glenmont first grade students in Mrs. Klugman’s class have some great friends in their fifth grade counterparts in Mr. Kourt’s class.

The two groups have been paired up this year in Glenmont’s Buddy Program, which matches classes from different grade levels together and then gives students within the classes a buddy from the other class. The first grade students found their buddies in Mr. Kourt’s class so kind and helpful that this fall they wrote a letter to the Board of Education recommending them for a Board Character Award.

The students from Mr. Kourt’s class (see below) were formally presented with their Character Awards at the Board’s meeting on Wednesday, January 20.

Board member Laura Bierman visited Glenmont earlier in the month for an activity between the two buddy classes. The first graders were writing in their journals about what it means to be a good buddy, and the fifth grade students were helping their younger peers develop ideas and write the piece.

We’re really proud of you guys,” Bierman told the students. “I thank you both. First graders for writing the letter, and fifth graders for taking this job so seriously. I hope it continues the rest of the year.”

The Board launched the character recognition effort in December 2007 to formally establish a process for learning about and honoring extraordinary acts of character on the part of BC students. Click here to learn more about the program.

The Board continues to seek nominations of students who have shown remarkable character. Send an e-mail to boe@bcsd.neric.org if you know a deserving student.
