2009-10 Superintendent's Notes

out and about

October 2, 2009

Greetings and welcome to the second month of the school year. By now I am sure your children are settled into their routines of going to school, participating in activities, and enjoying the fall weather. In the school district things are moving forward in a positive and constructive manner, with all our students and faculty busy working together.

One of the joys of my job, as superintendent, is to visit the schools and drop in on classes to observe the instruction, experience the learning process and listen to the students, teachers, staff and administrators. I purposely schedule two days a week or more to get out and about in the schools. Whenever I visit I am truly amazed at the great desire our children demonstrate to learn from K-12. They are eager, inquisitive, and curious about everything and anything in their education, their environment and their social network. That is the true excitement of working in a school. It makes the job of being superintendent worthwhile and dynamic knowing we do this work for those kids.

This is true Whether I am enjoying an inspirational guided reading session in Jeanne Ferrentino's Slingerlands 1st grade, assisting a kindergarten student in Nancy Davis' Elsmere class, or observing a stimulating class discussion in Beth Anderson's High School Detective Fiction Class. Learning, re-learning, and learning again is a dynamic cycle of life that we hope our children will carry with them into their future.
