BC musicians headed to All-State conference
BCHS seniors Elaine Kehoe and Aria Shi will represent Bethlehem Central High School this year in honor ensembles of the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Winter Conference, December 5 through 8 in Rochester. Violinist Ms. Kehoe was selected for the Symphony Orchestra, and violist Ms. Shi for the String Orchestra. Both are members of the BCHS Symphony Orchestra, directed by David Beck. READ MORE »
Board of Education celebrates Elsmere's Blue Ribbon School award
The Board of Education took time during its November 20 meeting to honor Elsmere Elementary School as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School. At the meeting, Elsmere Principal Kate Kloss -- who traveled this week to Washington DC to accept the award -- unveiled the plaque and flag given to each of this year's 286 Blue Ribbon Schools by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and non-public elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels and where leadership and instruction serve as models of success for schools across the country. Education 2014: Join an informal conversation with state legislators at BCHS on Dec. 4
Join Bethlehem’s representatives in the New York State Legislature for an informal conversation about issues impacting public education across New York. Assemblymember Patricia Fahy and State Senators Neil Breslin and Cecilia Tkaczyk will be available prior to the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, December 4 at 6 p.m. to discuss issues ranging from Common Core Learning Standards and state testing, to the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) and other factors that will influence the 2014-15 New York State Budget. Glenmont Elementary addresses test score gap for special education students
The New York State Education Department has identified Glenmont Elementary School as a Local Assistance Plan (LAP) school based on a test score gap between regular education students and special education students on state assessments administered in the spring of 2012. Parenting expert offers "Coffee with Cale" at elementary schools
Dr. Randy L. Cale, a psychologist and parenting expert, will host five informal morning sessions to discuss strategies families can use at home to keep students on track for success in 2013-14. Residents asked to call on state leaders to end GEA
The Bethlehem Central School District is asking residents to join in a community advocacy effort to let state leaders and area legislators know that the Bethlehem Central School District and its property taxpayers can no longer absorb huge losses in state aid. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Douglas is encouraging stakeholders, including parents, students, homeowners, and business leaders who support the Bethlehem schools to join him to write letters, make calls, and urge the Governor and legislators to eliminate the state’s Gap Elimination Adjustment. Seven BC students named 2014 National Merit Scholar semifinalists
Seven Bethlehem Central High School students have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Competition. Seniors James Barriere, Julia Champagne, Elizabeth Cultrara, Katherine Kolodziej, Max Rosenberg, Seth Schoenhaus and Aria Shi were chosen as members of the nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists. BCMS teacher named Outstanding Teacher of American History
They are the Daughters of the American Revolution, also known as DAR. She is the daughter of the American History teacher. Two, actually. And now, Megan McCabe - a seventh grade social studies teacher at BCMS - has been named Outstanding Teacher of American History by the New York State chapter of DAR, the non-profit women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism and preserving American history. District opens Athletic Director search
The Bethlehem Central School District is forming a committee to assist in the selection process of an Athletic Director. The selection committee will be charged with interviewing selected candidates for the first round of interviews. Applications for the position are being accepted through November 8 and a four-step interview process will get underway the week of November 11. LEARN MORE »
BC ranked #1 school district in Capital Region
Now among Top 10 Upstate NY School Districts
On the heels of being named the number one school district among 83 districts in the Capital Region, the Bethlehem Central School District has learned it has been rated among the top 10 school districts in all of Upstate New York, according to Buffalo-based business publication, Business First. Bethlehem is ranked #9 in academics in the annual rankings for 2013, up from its position last year at #11 and #12 in 2011.
The list of top-performing districts among 429 school districts, located in 48 of the state's 57 upstate counties, is compiled annually by the Business First, a sister publication of the Albany Business Review. READ MORE »
